How Do You Know When You've Written A Great Song?

So how do you know when you've written a great song? What pointers are there for you to be able to measure if you've created something that people will like and will be singing back to you when you sing it live. Well first things first all music is subjective, even the most successful songs aren’t liked by everyone in the world.

It’s all about your own instinct, I know myself that there are songs that I’ve written that didn’t get a great reception on first listen. Then as time went on they became some of my most popular songs. The only reason that happened was because I felt within myself that these were good songs. They felt good to perform live and most importantly I liked them.

If you don’t always want to rely purely on your own instinct then a great way to know is to perform them in front of an audience and see what reaction you get. I like to perform new songs in front of people who don’t know me and have never heard my music. These people have no connection to me and no reference points of previous songs. This is a great way to find out how good the songs are.

So I believe you should trust your instincts and your gut and be prepared to go out there and get your songs in front of an audience. That's the only way you'll know.
