Michael Green Interviews.... Catherine Rannus

Originally posted on October 8th 2020 here is a Q&A with musician Catherine Rannus she talked about her experiences in music.

Where did it all start for you getting into music?

Music was in my family and I started piano lessons with my aunty from the age of 4. I was classically trained up to grade 8 then went on to do a degree in jazz which was very challenging at the time as I couldn’t read from chords or improvise!! I battled through the 3 year course and didn’t really enjoy jazz or “get it” until the year after I had graduated!! Who are your influences? Absolutely everything and everyone! I love lots of different genres of music! With your music where do you tend to get your inspiration from e.g how do you start your compositions & what's your process? I don’t follow the same method with every composition or song I write. Sometimes I’ll get one line in my head then find the harmony that works with it. Often I’ll just start doodling around some chords on the piano and something will take shape. How important is it do you feel it is to listen to current music as well as music from the past? Well, I have 3 children so I am exposed to current pop songs whether I like it or not!! I do appreciate the current pop music - I think the production is really clean and kind of defines today’s era of music. My children immediately recognise “old fashioned” music by the sound!!

Do you feel it is important to watch other acts perform and to watch other live music?

It probably is important - you can take inspiration from this and see how it is done or indeed how not to do it!! As a lot of musicians, I don’t get to go and watch others as I’m usually out gigging myself!

Finally what tips do you have for anyone starting out when it comes to making music & performing live?

Just do it. Experience is everything. If you have a booking and there are only 3 people to perform to it doesn’t matter. If you record some music that never makes it anywhere, it doesn’t matter. It’s all part of your self development and experience.
