Michael Green Interviews... Melanie Quinn

Originally posted on August 11th 2017 here is a Q&A with singer-songwriter Melanie Quinn. We talked about her experiences in music.

Where did it all start for you getting into music?

As far as finding out who my true influcences were I would say when I started learning guitar at about 15 years old (before that it was typically Mcfly and disney songs like every girl growing up my age! Although don't get me wrong I still love them!) Who are your influences? The genres I started getting into may not necessarily be linked to what I play, also I like so many different music genres. It started from my love of classic rock/glam rock such as KISS, Motley Crue, Sabbeth. I also have a love of punk such as Ramones and Sex Pistols. A love of 60s such as The Doors and Beach Boys. All motown...the list goes on and on however I would say my current music is influenced by artist such as Lily Allen, Kate Nash and Jack Johnson.

With songwriting where do you tend to get your inspiration from e.g how do you start your songs & what's your process?

I often think of a subject matter, more situations I've been in makes it easier lets be honest. Alot of my songs are not love songs because I haven't had much experience with that which is odd for a musician, so alot of it is about how clumsy I am or how I feel I don't belong...all of that. It can start with just anything even just a name or subject matter...find some good 4 chords and bam! Haha

How important is it do you feel it is to listen to current music as well as music from the past?

If I am honest I can be stuck in the past of what I listen too, but I always make sure to give local artist a listen and you'll be quite surprised!

Do you feel it is important to watch other acts perform and to watch other live music?

Very important, however it's very rare these days to get a decent audience and grab there attention, its just the way it is, although I always try and make sure to listen up, if I'm not listening it's more then likely because someone is talking to me!

Finally what tips do you have for anyone starting out when it comes to songwriting & performing?

If solo dont go up and gig if you're not ready practice the hell out of your songs songs. Nail 3 songs down perfectly then play at an open mic, I made that mistake, I played back in 2014 and sounded awful I'm pretty sure some promoters wont have me now cos of how bad I was...
