Here is a Q&A with artist & producer K. Flow. He talks about his experiences in music.

1. How did your journey in music begin?
It began in 2007 when I was in university. I picked up a bass guitar and started learning. Later, I went to another university and met some friends who were into music and sound production.
I jumped in and started as a music producer, beat maker, and mix engineer, which I still do to this day.
2. Who have been your biggest musical influences or inspirations?
Number one is Bob Marley — that’s my GOAT. Reggae, hip hop, R&B, soul, and Afrobeats have all shaped me and helped me become an Afro-fusion artist.
3. When it comes to creating music, where do you usually draw your inspiration from? Could you walk us through your songwriting or creative process?
For me, the music is already inside; I just tap into my inner self. I do a lot of freestyling, and melodies are laid down before I start writing.
Sometimes my friends give me ideas, or I draw inspiration from what’s happening in my environment. I simply express how I feel and don’t care what people think. It’s my art and my truth.

4. How important do you think it is to keep up with current music trends while also learning from music of the past?
I don’t really follow trends. I just do what I like and take a small percentage of new sounds. Without the past, the future can’t really function.
I always tap into the past because I feel that some of the best music was made back then. Older artists understood what music meant more than we do today, myself included — so we’re all to blame.
5. Do you think it’s valuable for artists to watch other acts perform or to regularly attend live shows?
Yes, I think it’s important so you can learn from others and support each other. Sometimes you need to go out and see what others have inside them, so you don’t feel like you’re the greatest.
There are so many talented people out there. Be open to applauding and learning.

6. Finally, what advice would you give to someone just starting out with live performances and songwriting?
Believe in yourself and keep going. If you want it that badly, you will never stop, no matter the results.
Never let the public or the industry tell you what to do when it comes to your craft and art. Always express yourself to the end.
