Here is a Q&A with musician, singer-songwriter & producer Mat Roberts. He talks about his experiences in music.

1. How did your journey in music begin?

I picked up the guitar on the 4th of October, 1990, and on that day I made my first album. Prior to that, I had been playing a tennis racket guitar to Iron Maiden back in 1988. I’ve been listening to music since 1978, and the first song I ever learned to sing was You’re the One That I Want.

2. Who have been your biggest musical influences or inspirations?

I love Marc Bolan, The Beatles, Prince, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, Neil Finn, and all the classics.

3. When it comes to creating music, where do you usually draw your inspiration from? Could you walk us through your songwriting or creative process?

Inspiration can come from anywhere — from life, other songs, people I meet, or different situations. Sometimes a single line or melody will come to mind and I’ll build on it. Other times, the entire song arrives fully formed, and occasionally I’ll rework it until it feels right.

4. How important do you think it is to keep up with current music trends while also learning from music of the past?

It’s very important to pay attention to current music. I wouldn’t say trends specifically, but rather the music being made right now. I love new artists, old artists — all artists. Anyone who creates.

5. Do you think it’s valuable for artists to watch other acts perform or to regularly attend live shows?

Yes, definitely. You can learn a lot from other artists — from inspiration and equipment they use to song structure, crowd interaction, and stage management.

6. Finally, what advice would you give to someone just starting out with live performances and songwriting?

Be happy to perform anywhere, from playing on your phone to performing in front of 50,000 people, and at every point in between. Always engage with people, stay positive, and try to understand what makes people happy. After all, the gift and joy of music is about interaction — with yourself and with others.
