Originally posted on 17th March 2016 here is my interview with singer-songwriter Alex Appleton. We talked about his experiences writing songs and performing live.
Raised in Bedford, Alex Appleton first plied his trade as a singer, guitarist and songwriter in the North-East of England in various bands and sonic experiments, culminating in his work in rock power trio Avast! Narwhals, whose music has been described as "equivalent to watching Neptune expertly guiding his chariot through the challenging spirit of the mighty ocean". Having moved south for a more temperate climate, he writes music which finely balances absurdity and musicality, which could be loosely described as Alternative Rock with a Lo-Fi feel.
Turning his back on noise-rock, Alex holed himself up in his attic, taught himself the drums, and began recording demos to an old Tascam Cassette Tape four-track. The resulting four song EP, Cantaloupe, was distributed via a limited release of 100 download codes, whilst ideas for a full album are fully fleshed out. Work on new material is ongoing, and demos are frequently published on the Artist's Soundcloud for general consumption where feedback is welcome! Having performed more recently as a solo acoustic act, plans for a full electric band to play the new material are in motion. Expect to hear the loud blurring distorted guitars and a battery of drums from a nearby venue in the not-so-distant future.
